Look up at the motor unit — the label is usually on the side or back

Blocking

Brand, model number, and date codephoto Blocks: ADR-005 — local garage control Photograph the whole label. The date code decides whether local control is even possible: units shipped since late 2025 run Security+ 3.0, which blocks ratgdo and Konnected entirely.
Colour of the 'learn' buttonphoto Blocks: ADR-005 On the motor unit. Yellow = Security+ 2.0 (works with local controllers). Photograph it.
Power outlet near the opener Is there a free ceiling outlet? A local controller needs power up there.
Number of bays and doors One opener per door, or one shared?
Wall console wiringphoto Photograph the wires at the wall button — the terminal pair is where a controller taps in.

Legacy alarm panel

Utility closet, garage wall, or a hall closet — a beige metal box

Blocking

Is there one at all? Blocks: Phase 1 — door/window sensors This is the single highest-value thing to find today. If the house has a wired alarm loop, every door and window already has a sensor and a Konnected board brings the whole loop into HA — instead of buying and battery-maintaining 20 wireless contacts.
Open it and photograph the boardphoto Blocks: Phase 1 Photograph the terminal strip with the zone labels visible. Count the zones and note anything written on the door.
Do the contacts still exist? Check a few window and door frames for the small recessed magnetic contacts. Present and wired is what matters.
Keypad locations Note where they are — usually near the entry doors.

Electrical panel

Garage, utility room, or an exterior wall

Blocking

Main breaker amperage and panel brandphoto Blocks: Phase 4 — EV charger and metering Photograph the panel with the door open, and the directory label. The main breaker rating decides whether an EV charger needs a service upgrade.
Free breaker spaces Blocks: Phase 4 Count empty slots. EV charger, pool equipment, outdoor audio, and landscape lighting each want one.
Physical room inside the panelphoto Blocks: ADR-007 — Emporia Vue 3 CT clamps go around individual branch wires inside the panel. Cramped panels make 16 clamps difficult. Photograph the interior.
Sub-panels Any second panel? Where, and what feeds it?
Meter location Where does service enter, and how far is it from the garage?

Existing wiring & pathways

Structured wiring panel, attic, closets

Important

Structured wiring panelphoto Blocks: Phase 0 — the irreversible phase A recessed panel, often in a closet or utility room, where coax and Ethernet terminate. Photograph what is in it.
Existing Ethernet drops Blocks: Phase 0 Which rooms have RJ45 wall plates? List them. Every existing drop is a pull you do not have to pay for.
Coax locations Often the easiest path to reuse for a pull.
Attic access and conditionphoto Blocks: Phase 0 Where is the hatch? Is the attic walkable? This determines whether wire pulls are a morning or a project.
Where ISP service enters Demarc point — the equipment rack wants to be near it.
Candidate equipment location Needs power, ventilation, and room for a rack and UPS. A closet that bakes in summer will shorten the life of everything in it.

Pool equipment pad

Usually a slab beside the house or behind a fence

Important

Pump brand, model, and whether it is variable-speedphoto Blocks: Pool product — pump control Photograph the label. Variable-speed pumps usually expose automation; single-speed often needs a relay.
Existing automation controllerphoto Blocks: Pool product Look for Pentair IntelliCenter/EasyTouch, Hayward Omni/ProLogic, or Jandy. Photograph any control box. This determines whether pool control is an integration or a project.
Heater brand and modelphoto Photograph the label if present.
Skimmer count and lid diameterphoto Blocks: ADR-006 — WaterGuru SENSE S3 The SENSE replaces a skimmer lid, so it has to fit. Measure the lid diameter and photograph the skimmer.
Salt cell present? Chlorine generator on the return plumbing.
Power and conduit at the pad What is already run out there, and is there a spare conduit?
Pool gate Does one exist, and does it self-close? Note the frame material for a contact sensor.

HVAC & thermostat

Hallway walls, attic, closet, exterior condenser units

Important

Number of systems and zones Blocks: Climate product — currently missing from the plan Count the condensers outside and the thermostats inside. Two zones means two thermostats.
Is there a C-wire?photo Blocks: Climate product Pull the existing thermostat off the wall and photograph the wiring. No C-wire means an adapter or a wire pull before any smart thermostat works.
Air handler location(s) Attic, closet, or garage. Affects where filter and leak sensors go.
Filter sizes Note them — filter-life tracking needs to know what to remind you to buy.
Condenser agephoto Photograph the data plate; the date is usually in the serial.

Water

Utility room, garage, exterior wall, street

Important

Main shutoff location and pipe diameterphoto Blocks: Phase 6 — automatic water shut-off Moen Flo and Phyn are sized to pipe diameter and need a straight run. Photograph the shutoff and measure the pipe.
Water heater type, location, and agephoto Tank or tankless. Photograph the data plate.
Likely leak points Blocks: Phase 6 — leak sensors Under-sink cabinets, laundry connections, water heater pan, fridge line, any second-floor bathroom. Count them — that is the sensor order quantity.
Irrigation controllerphoto Existing box in the garage? Photograph it and count the zones.
Exterior hose bibs and backflow Freeze-vulnerable points for Phase 6 temperature sensors.

Doors & doorbell

Front door, back door, garage entry

While you're there

Front door thickness and deadbolt bore Blocks: Phase 1 — smart lock fit Most smart locks fit 1⅜–1¾ inch doors with a 2⅛ inch bore. Measure rather than assume — an oversized or non-standard door is a real problem.
Existing doorbell wiring and transformerphoto Blocks: Phase 1 — doorbell Is there low-voltage wiring at the door? Find the transformer (often in the attic or near the panel) and photograph its voltage rating.
Door swing and handing Left or right hand, inswing or outswing — locks are handed.
Back and garage entry doors Same measurements if they are getting locks too.

Rooms & placement

Walk the whole house

While you're there

TV wall positions Blocks: Phase 0 — Ethernet drops For each planned TV: is there an outlet, what is the wall made of, and is there a path for a cable? Every TV wants two Ethernet drops.
Ceiling speaker candidate positions Blocks: Phase 0 — speaker wire Kitchen and dining. Note joist direction if visible from the attic — it decides what is possible.
Outdoor TV wall — sun exposure Which direction does it face, and how much direct sun does it get? This decides shade-rated versus full-sun, and whether the interim Vizio will survive.
Outdoor outlets Photograph locations. Landscape lighting, speakers, and cameras all need power or PoE.
Camera sightlines Stand where each camera would go and check the view and the cable path.
Existing smoke/CO detectors Are they interconnected 120V? That determines the integration approach.

Kitchen, laundry

While you're there

What conveys with the house Which appliances stay? Affects what needs buying.
Laundry connections Gas or electric dryer? 240V present?
Ceiling fans Count them and note whether they use RF remotes — a Bond Bridge covers those without replacing the fans.
Window orientation Which windows face west? Those are the smart-shade candidates with real energy return in a Texas summer.
